New Standards Set For Young Athletes’ Chest Protectors

Dr. Jeffrey Mjaanes, sports medicine and pediatric orthopedic physician at Midwest Jeffrey Mjaanes, M.D.Orthopaedics at Rush, was on NPR this past week discussing new chest protector standards taking effect next year for young athletes. The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) approved changes in chest protector equipment in order to better protect young athletes from commotio cordis – the No. 2 cause of sudden cardia arrest in the U.S.
